Claflin University is a private historically black university in Orangeburg, also known as `The Garden City`, which the principal city and the county seat of Orangeburg County, situated in the US state of South Carolina, having a population estimated at a number of more than 13 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
Claflin University was established in 1869 and it is the oldest historically black university in the state. It was founded by Methodist missionaries to prepare the freed slaves to take their place as full American citizens.
The university currently offers 33 undergraduate majors, an MBA and a Master of Science in Biothechnology, among other educational programs.
Claflin's athletic teams are known as the Panthers and Lady Panthers, which compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, tennis, softball and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are orange and maroon.
Leo Twiggs - the first African American to receive a Doctorate of Arts from the University of Georgia, and Sandy Fields - drafted by World Basketball Association, are Claflin University's notable alumni.
